Science experiment – Lava lamp

The best chemistry-related experiences often involve beakers, test tubes, and smokes of colorful chemicals. Though our students didn’t have access to technical material at home, we came up with an activity where they could use daily objects to have an equally fulfilling encounter with chemistry.
The children mixed baking soda and vinegar and created a chemical reaction in which carbon dioxide gas and gas bubbles were formed in the form of fizz. Forget about the kids, even as adults, on this side of the screen, held our breath to see the result. They placed a torch or flashlight below it which made the whole spectacle seem very much like a lava lamp. Our young learners began to understand scientific methodology- learning how to develop hypotheses, design ways to test them, and conclude results from findings. They also learned that science is part of their lives – and it’s a lot of fun!
