To gain an insight on how friction works, our students of Grade 2 performed an activity. Through the activity, as the students started to fill the bottle with rice, small air pockets formed between the rice grains and the bottle. Then with the use of the pencil to compress the rice inside of the bottle, rice grains were forced to rub closer together with little to no air pockets in between. Once the pencil was lifted, the friction caused the pencil to “stick” in the rice. This was a simple, yet a ingenious way for our students to understand how friction can be created when the pencil rubs against the rice.
